Cool Facts
Ancient Constantinople. Fatih is built on the same piece of land where Constantinople, one of history's greatest cities, was located for over 1,000 years. It was a center of power, culture, and trade that shaped the entire world.
Water on three sides. Fatih is surrounded by water on almost every direction: the Golden Horn is to the north, the Sea of Marmara is to the south, and the Bosphorus Strait is to the east. This made it a perfect place for a great city.
Lots of people live here. About 368,000 people live in Fatih today, making it a bustling modern neighborhood. It's also where most of Istanbul's government offices are located.
Protected by walls. The western edge of Fatih is marked by the Theodosian wall, an ancient barrier that once protected Constantinople from invaders. This wall still stands as a reminder of the city's past.
A district with history. In 2009, a smaller district called Eminönü was joined back to Fatih because it was too small to be on its own. Today, Fatih covers about 15 square kilometers of Istanbul's most important land.
