Fingal's Cave

Made of basalt columns. Fingal's Cave has tall, six-sided rock pillars that formed millions of years ago when hot lava cooled and cracked into perfect geometric shapes, kind of like nature's own building blocks stacked together.

Sounds extra amazing inside. The cave is famous for its incredible natural acoustics, which means sounds bounce around inside in a really cool way that makes music and voices echo beautifully.

Located on Staffa island. The cave sits on an uninhabited Scottish island in the Inner Hebrides, a group of islands off the coast of Scotland that you can only reach by boat.

Named after a legendary hero. An 18th-century Scottish poet named James Macpherson wrote an epic poem about a hero called Fingal, and people started calling the cave by his name because it seemed so magical and heroic.

Protected nature reserve. The National Trust for Scotland owns and protects the cave as part of a national nature reserve to keep it safe and special for visitors and wildlife.
