The Great Plains

Huge grassy region. The Great Plains stretch across a massive area of North America, mostly covered in prairie, steppe, and grassland that goes on for hundreds of miles.

East of the Rockies. The Great Plains sit to the east of the Rocky Mountains and form the western part of a larger area called the Interior Plains.

Different grass types. The Great Plains include mixed grass prairies and the famous Tallgrass prairie, each with its own special plants and wildlife.

Northern extension. The Great Plains stretch all the way into Northern Canada, where they transition into the Taiga Plains and Boreal Plains ecosystems.

The High Plains. The western edge of the Great Plains, closest to the Rocky Mountains, is sometimes called the High Plains because of its higher elevation.
