Pressurized metal cylinder. Fire extinguishers are tough metal cans filled with special stuff under pressure, so when you squeeze the handle, the extinguishing agent shoots out fast and forcefully.

Different agents work differently. Some contain dry chemical powder, others have CO2 gas or water, and each type works best on different kinds of fires, like grease fires or electrical fires.

For small fires only. Fire extinguishers are made to handle small fires you can control quickly, not huge fires that have spread across the ceiling or grown too dangerous to approach.

Quick emergency response. Because they're small and easy to grab, fire extinguishers let people act fast during emergencies and stop a small fire from becoming a big disaster.

Mostly cylindrical shape. Most fire extinguishers are shaped like tall cylinders so they're easy to hold and aim, though some unusual shapes exist too.
