Tiny fake insects. Fly fishers use small artificial flies made by tying colorful threads, fur, and feathers onto tiny fish hooks to look like real insects that fish like to eat. These fake insects are so light they cannot be thrown very far with normal fishing gear.

Special weighted lines. Because the fake flies are too light to cast on their own, fly fishers use heavy fishing lines that do the work of carrying the tiny fly through the air. The weight is in the line itself, not the lure, which is totally different from regular fishing.

Waders and water gear. Fly fishers often wear special waterproof pants called waders so they can wade right into streams and rivers to get closer to the fish. They also carry a hand net to scoop up fish once they catch them.

Copying nature closely. The artificial flies are designed to look like real insects by copying their tiny details, like wing patterns and leg-like hairs. This tricks fish into thinking they are eating a real meal.

Different casting style. Fly fishing requires a completely different casting technique than other types of fishing, using a special back-and-forth motion rather than a simple flick. This takes practice to master but creates a unique rhythm to the sport.
