Born in India. Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India, but moved to England as a boy after his father passed away. Later, his family lived on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu for four years, which became one of his favorite places.
Wrote bestselling books. Durrell turned his animal-collecting adventures into exciting books that people loved to read. His most famous book, My Family and Other Animals, became a bestseller and told stories about his time in Corfu catching creatures and having wild adventures.
Hunted for animals. Durrell went on expeditions to places like the Cameroons, British Guiana, Argentina, and Paraguay to find and collect animals. He used money from his father's will to fund these trips and bring back creatures to study.
Found success through writing. When Durrell and his wife had very little money, she encouraged him to write about his first animal-collecting trip. His book The Overloaded Ark sold so well that he was able to keep writing and traveling.
Worked with animals. Durrell was not just a writer but also a real naturalist, zookeeper, and television presenter who worked directly with animals and taught others about them.
