Fought racism peacefully. John Lewis risked his safety marching and protesting against laws that treated Black people unfairly. He believed in nonviolence even when others were violent toward him.

Made the Freedom Rides. In 1961, John Lewis traveled on buses through the South to challenge segregation laws. These brave journeys, called Freedom Rides, inspired many others to stand up for equality.

Spoke at the March on Washington. At age 23, John Lewis gave a powerful speech at the 1963 March on Washington in front of 250,000 people. His words helped inspire the Civil Rights Act that ended segregation.

Served in Congress for 34 years. Starting in 1987, John Lewis represented Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives. He spent his decades in Congress continuing to fight for equal rights and justice for all people.

Became a living legend. John Lewis wrote books about his life and continued teaching young people about standing up for what's right. He remained active in politics and activism until his death in 2020.
