Cool Facts
Disappears underground. Ghost orchids spend most of their lives hidden beneath the soil as underground roots and don't pop up above ground very often. When they finally bloom, they seem to appear out of nowhere like a phantom.
No visible leaves. Unlike most plants, ghost orchids have almost no green leaves that you can see. This strange look is why people call them 'ghosts' since they seem too pale and leafless to be real plants.
Incredibly rare. Ghost orchids are some of the hardest flowers to spot in the wild because they're so uncommon and hidden. Orchid hunters in Florida and other places spend years searching for just one bloom.
Mysterious pollination. Scientists still aren't completely sure how ghost orchids get pollinated in nature, which adds to their mysterious reputation. The flowers seem to depend on specific insects or conditions that scientists are still working to understand.
Found in two types. The American ghost orchid lives in Florida swamps while the Eurasian ghost orchid grows in Europe and Asia. Both are equally rare and fascinating in their own regions.
