Cool Facts
Grass dominates. Grasslands are places where grasses are the main plants you see, though you might also spot clover, wildflowers, and other herbs mixed in. They're different from forests because trees don't take over.
Found everywhere. Grasslands exist naturally on every continent except Antarctica, which is too cold and icy. They cover between one-third and two-thirds of all land on Earth, making them one of the largest biomes around.
Three types exist. Some grasslands are completely natural and have never been changed by humans. Others are semi-natural, meaning humans have shaped them over time. Still others are agricultural grasslands where people grow crops or raise animals.
More than just grass. While grasses are the stars of the show, grasslands also have sedges, rushes, and legumes like clover that add nutrients to the soil. This mix of plants creates a healthy home for many animals.
