Cool Facts
Ancient roots. Greco-Roman wrestling comes from wrestling styles practiced in ancient Greece and Rome thousands of years ago. Athletes in those times wrestled without rules about what body parts they could use.
Olympic champion. This sport was one of the very first events in the modern Olympics when they started in 1896, and it has been part of every Summer Olympics since 1904. That makes it one of the oldest continuously contested Olympic sports.
Upper body only. Unlike freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestlers can only use their arms and upper body to attack and defend. They cannot grab or attack below the waist, which makes the sport very different and focused on strength and technique above the hips.
Technique matters most. Successful Greco-Roman wrestlers need to master throws, holds, and balance using clever technique, not just brute strength. A wrestler who understands body mechanics and positioning can win against someone who is simply more muscular.
Worldwide sport. Greco-Roman wrestling is practiced and competed in countries all around the world, with national teams, world championships, and professional athletes. Every continent has wrestlers training in this ancient style.
