Light wing design. Modern hang gliders use an aluminum or composite frame covered with special synthetic sailcloth that creates a strong but incredibly lightweight wing, making it possible for one person to launch and fly it.

Steering with your body. Instead of buttons or joysticks, pilots control the hang glider by shifting their weight in a harness suspended below the frame, leaning left or right to turn and forward or backward to climb or dive.

Powered by nature. Hang gliders have no engines at all, so pilots soar by catching natural air currents called thermals (warm air rising from the ground) that lift them higher into the sky.

Launched from high places. Pilots typically launch from mountains or hills where wind pushes them into the air, or they can be towed by a motorized aircraft and then released to fly on their own.

Pure flying freedom. Many pilots say hang gliding feels like the closest thing to being a bird, giving you an amazing view of the landscape below while experiencing the sensation of true flight.
