Cool Facts
Fancy spotty duo. Harlequin shrimp are only about 2 inches long but have stunning purple, pink, or brown spots with bright colored edges. They live together as a pair for life, always staying close to their partner.
Starfish specialist. These shrimp eat only starfish, and they're really good at it. They can even tackle the huge crown-of-thorns starfish, which are dangerous pests that destroy coral reefs.
Reef heroes. When harlequin shrimp attack crown-of-thorns starfish, they actually help save the coral. While the shrimp feed on the starfish, the coral gets a break from being eaten.
Tropical ocean homes. You'll find harlequin shrimp living on coral reefs in the warm Indian and Pacific Oceans, hiding in crevices and hunting when night falls.
Two color versions. Shrimp from the Pacific have bright purple and yellow spots, while those from the Indian Ocean have brownish spots with blue edges, making them slightly different looks.
