What makes a weed?. A weed is just a plant in the wrong place. A wildflower might be beautiful in a meadow but a terrible weed in your vegetable garden. The same plant can be wanted or unwanted depending on where it's growing.

Weeds hurt farming. When weeds grow in crop fields, they compete with vegetables and grains for water, sunlight, and nutrients. Big weed invasions can shrink harvests so much that farmers lose serious money.

Invasive weeds wreck ecosystems. Some weeds are plants that don't naturally belong in a place. When introduced to a new environment, these invasive species can take over and damage local plants and animals that evolved there for thousands of years.

Weeds are everywhere. You'll find weeds in gardens, lawns, parks, and even sidewalk cracks. Farmers, gardeners, and landscapers spend enormous time and effort trying to control them.

Why weeds survive. Weeds are super tough survivors. They spread quickly, adapt to many environments, and are hard to kill. These traits that make them successful also make them hard to get rid of.
