Harpy Eagle

Incredibly powerful hunter. The harpy eagle is the largest bird of prey in the Americas and one of the biggest eagles in the entire world. It hunts in the thick canopy of rainforests, diving down to snatch animals from the trees.

Canopy king. These eagles live in the upper layers of tropical rainforests where trees are tallest, making their home high above the ground. They spend most of their time perched and watching for prey among the branches.

Specialized sloths specialist. Harpy eagles hunt sloths and other tree-dwelling animals as their main food. Their long talons and powerful grip make them perfectly built for grabbing prey from moving branches.

Habitat loss threat. Rainforests where harpy eagles live are being cut down, and the birds have disappeared from many places where they once lived. They are especially rare in Central America now.

Unique bird family. The harpy eagle belongs to its own special genus called Harpia, which makes it quite different from other eagles and shows how unique it really is.
