Cool Facts
Ruled as pharaoh. Hatshepsut was Egypt's second confirmed female pharaoh, beginning as regent (a helper leader) for her young stepson around 1479 BC and eventually ruling Egypt for about 21 years until around 1458 BC.
Dressed as a man. In official statues and portraits, Hatshepsut wore a false beard and male clothing to match how pharaohs were traditionally shown, even though everyone knew she was a woman.
Built amazing temples. She ordered the construction of her famous mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, which is one of the most impressive temples from ancient Egypt and still stands today.
Led trading expeditions. Hatshepsut sent successful missions across the seas to trade for rare goods like incense, myrrh, and precious woods that Egypt needed, helping make the country wealthy.
Left detailed records. Unlike many ancient leaders, Hatshepsut had her accomplishments written on temple walls and stone carvings so that people would remember her achievements forever.
