Lights on Cars. Headlamps are bright lights mounted on the front of vehicles like cars, trucks, and motorcycles. They shine forward to help drivers see the road, obstacles, and other vehicles when it's dark or foggy outside.

Different Names. In the United States, the lamp itself is called a headlamp, but the beam of light it produces is called a headlight. In other countries, both the lamp and the light beam might be called the same thing.

Safety at Night. Without headlamps, driving after dark would be extremely dangerous because drivers wouldn't be able to see where they're going. Headlamps help prevent accidents by making the road visible and letting other drivers see your vehicle coming.

How They Work. Headlamps use bulbs or LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that create bright light, which is then focused by special lenses and reflectors. Modern headlamps can even adjust their brightness or direction automatically to help drivers see better in different situations.
