Invented by Stephanie Kwolek. A brilliant chemist named Stephanie Kwolek created Kevlar at DuPont in 1965. She was experimenting with different chemical recipes when she discovered this amazing fiber that was five times stronger than steel.
First used in racing tires. When Kevlar was first used commercially in the early 1970s, it went straight into racing tires. It made tires stronger and more reliable, helping race cars go faster and safer.
Stops bullets. Kevlar became famous for stopping bullets and protecting people. Today, it's used in body armor, helmets, and protective gear for police officers and soldiers because it can withstand incredible force.
Heat resistant superpower. Kevlar doesn't melt or burn easily, even at extremely high temperatures. This makes it perfect for firefighter gear, space suits, and anywhere people need protection from heat and flames.
Spun into many forms. Kevlar can be spun into strong ropes or woven into fabric sheets. It can also be mixed into other materials to make composite parts for cars, boats, and sports equipment that need to be light but incredibly strong.
