High Middle Ages

Cities grew fast. During the High Middle Ages, Europe's population boomed and people started moving from farms to towns and cities. This was one of the first big times that cities became super important centers of life and work in Europe.

Economy thrived. The economy got so strong during this period that some areas of Europe wouldn't have that much wealth again until hundreds of years later, way back in the 1800s. All those new people meant more workers, more trade, and more money flowing around.

Italy rose to power. Great Italian city-states like Venice and Florence became hugely important and powerful during the High Middle Ages. These weren't countries, but wealthy independent cities that controlled their own trade and government.

Learning and art flourished. The High Middle Ages included something called the Renaissance of the 12th century, when people got really interested in learning, art, and new ideas. This creative energy would eventually lead to an even bigger cultural movement hundreds of years later.
