Festival timing. Homowo happens at the end of April into May, right when the Ga people plant their crops before the rainy season begins.
Remembering hardship. The festival celebrates and honors a devastating famine that the Ga people experienced long ago in precolonial Ghana, turning that sad memory into a joyful occasion.
Where it happens. Homowo is celebrated in the Greater Accra Region by the Ga people, with deep roots in the Asere Quarter and among the Accra communities.
Annual tradition. This harvest custom returns every year as an important way for the Ga people to gather together, give thanks for their crops, and celebrate their shared history.
