Massive curved bills. Hornbills have long, downward-curving bills that are often brightly colored and sometimes topped with a bony casque (a hard bump). Their strong bills help them grab fruit and snatch up small animals to eat.

Fused neck vertebrae. Hornbills are the only birds in the world whose first and second neck bones are permanently fused together. This special fusion gives their neck extra stability, like a built-in brace that helps support their heavy bills.

Found in warm places. These amazing birds live in tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Asia, and Melanesia. They thrive in forests and woodlands where they can find plenty of fruit and small creatures to eat.

Loyal partners for life. Hornbills are monogamous, meaning they stay with the same partner and raise babies together. They nest in holes inside tree trunks or sometimes cliff cavities, creating safe homes for their chicks.

Fruit and bug eaters. The whole hornbill family is omnivorous, snacking on a mix of fruits, insects, and small animals. Different species have different favorite foods, but they all need both plants and protein to stay healthy.
