Wings Under Water. Hydrofoils are like airplane wings, but they work underwater instead of in the air. As a boat with hydrofoils goes faster, these wings push water down and lift the boat's hull completely out of the water.

Less Drag, More Speed. When the boat's hull is sitting in the water, it creates a lot of resistance called drag, which slows it down. By lifting the hull up on hydrofoils, boats can travel much faster because there is way less water holding them back.

Smooth Sailing. Boats with hydrofoils give a smoother, more comfortable ride than regular boats because the hull isn't bouncing and splashing through waves. Instead, it glides above the water on those underwater wings.

Engineering Magic. The design of hydrofoils is tricky because they have to be shaped just right to create the perfect lifting force at different speeds. Engineers carefully craft them so boats can take off and stay balanced above the water.
