Magnets Do All the Work. Maglev trains use strong electromagnets to push and pull the train upward, so the train actually floats above the track without ever touching it. This means no friction from wheels grinding on rails.
Incredibly Fast Speeds. Because there is no friction slowing them down, maglev trains can zoom along at speeds over 300 miles per hour. Some test versions have gone even faster in special conditions.
Two Types of Levitation. Some maglev trains use repelling magnets (pushing apart), while others use attracting magnets (pulling together). Both methods lift the train up and keep it floating steadily.
Real Trains Running Today. Japan and China have working maglev train lines that carry passengers. Japan's train connects Tokyo to nearby cities, while China's line runs between Shanghai and its airport.
Smooth Like Butter. Because the train never touches the track, passengers experience a super smooth, quiet ride with almost no bumping or vibrations. It feels like gliding through the air.
