What they do. A hyperlink is a clickable piece of text or image that takes you instantly to another page or location when you click or tap it. It's like a digital portal that connects different pieces of information together.

Anchor text. The words you actually click on are called anchor text, usually shown in blue and underlined. This is what tells you where the link will take you.

The bigger picture. When you have text full of hyperlinks, it's called hypertext. Web pages are basically hypertext, because they're packed with links connecting to other pages and information.

How you use them. When you click links to move around the internet, you're navigating or browsing. Without hyperlinks, the web would just be a bunch of separate pages with no way to connect them.

Smart targeting. Hyperlinks can point to an entire webpage or to a specific section within a page, like jumping directly to a heading or image instead of scrolling through everything.
