The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Dog powered transportation. Teams of 12 to 16 sled dogs pull the musher's sled across the frozen Alaskan wilderness, covering over 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome in 8 to 15 days.

Historic starting point. The Iditarod race began in 1973 to celebrate the skills of the best sled dog mushers and teams, but it has grown into one of the world's most famous endurance races.

Winter wonderland race. The race happens every year in early March when Alaska's landscape is frozen solid, making it the perfect time for sled dogs to show their incredible strength and speed.

Minimum team rules. At the finish line in Nome, a musher must have at least 5 of their original dogs still on the towline, which means every dog in the race is important to the team.
