The Goldilocks size. Intermediate-mass black holes are way heavier than stellar black holes (made from dead stars) but way lighter than supermassive black holes at galaxy centers. They weigh between 100 and 100,000 times more than our Sun.
Hard to spot. These black holes are tricky to find because they don't shine as brightly as smaller ones or pull in as much material as giant ones. Scientists have to look at how gas clouds move around them to know they're there.
The missing piece. Astronomers think intermediate-mass black holes might explain how supermassive black holes grow so huge. If smaller black holes merge and combine over billions of years, they could eventually become the giant monsters we see at the centers of galaxies.
Found in our galaxy. Scientists have discovered several intermediate-mass black hole candidates in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Some of the best evidence comes from watching how quickly gas spins around these invisible objects.
Still mysterious. We don't fully understand how intermediate-mass black holes form, which makes them one of space's biggest unsolved puzzles. New telescopes are helping astronomers find more of them and solve this cosmic mystery.
