Cool Facts
Like a postal address. An IP address works just like your home address, but for your computer or phone. It tells other devices exactly where to find you on the internet so they can send you information.
Numbers and dots. IP addresses are made of numbers separated by dots, like 192.168.1.1. Each number can be anywhere from 0 to 255, and together they create a unique label for your device.
Two main jobs. IP addresses do two things: they identify which device is which on a network, and they show where that device is located so messages get delivered to the right place.
Every device needs one. Whenever you connect your computer, phone, tablet, or any other device to the internet, it gets assigned an IP address so it can send and receive information online.
Addresses can change. Your device might get a different IP address each time you connect to the internet, especially if your internet company gives out addresses automatically instead of keeping them permanent.
