The Ishtar Gate

Gateway to Glory. The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate built into Babylon's inner city wall around 569 BC. King Nebuchadnezzar II ordered its construction to be absolutely spectacular and impressive.

Blue and Gold Beauty. The gate was covered in brilliant blue glazed bricks decorated with golden images of dragons and other creatures. These shimmering tiles could be seen from far away and told everyone this was a truly important place.

Processional Pathway. The Ishtar Gate stood at the beginning of a grand walled road that led directly into the city center. Important ceremonies and parades would travel through this magnificent entrance during festivals and celebrations.

Royal Command. King Nebuchadnezzar II was one of Babylon's greatest rulers, and he spared no expense on the Ishtar Gate. He wanted it to show the world how powerful and wealthy his kingdom really was.

Northern Entrance. The gate was positioned on the north side of Babylon's inner walls, making it one of the main ways people entered the city. Its location meant thousands of visitors would pass through it regularly.
