Cool Facts
A spear-like tool. The javelin is a sleek, pointed stick about 2.5 meters long (that is roughly as tall as a basketball hoop). Throwers grip it near the back and launch it with tremendous force and speed.
Running gives power. Before throwing, athletes sprint through a special runway to build up speed and momentum. This running start is what helps them hurl the javelin incredibly far, sometimes over 90 meters.
Part of big competitions. Javelin throw is an official event in both the decathlon (a tough 10-event competition for men) and the heptathlon (a seven-event competition for women) at the Olympics.
Technique matters most. It is not just about strength. Champions use perfect angles, timing, and form to throw farther than their opponents, much like how a baseball pitcher's technique helps them throw harder.
Ancient Olympic roots. Javelin throwing started as a real hunting weapon long ago, but ancient Greeks turned it into an athletic sport around 2,500 years ago.
