The Greatest Spectacle. The Indianapolis 500 is called The Greatest Spectacle in Racing and is one of the three most prestigious car races in the entire world, alongside races in Monaco and France.
Nicknamed the Brickyard. The track got its nickname because it was first paved with brick in 1909, and one yard of that original brick still sits at the start and finish line today.
Annual May tradition. The race happens every year over Memorial Day weekend, usually in the last week of May, as part of the IndyCar Series, which is the top level of American open-wheel racing.
Right near Indianapolis. The race takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a town called Speedway, which is a suburb right next to Indianapolis, Indiana.
