Pivoting stick controller. A joystick is an input device with a stick attached to a base that can tilt in different directions. It tells the machine it's connected to which way the stick is pointing, so the machine knows how to respond.

Airplane control device. In real aircraft, the joystick is called a control column and is the main way pilots steer the plane. Pilots can use either a center stick in the middle of the cockpit or a side-stick on the armrest, depending on the airplane's design.

Video game controller. The same technology that controls airplanes also powers video game controllers. When you move a joystick in a game, it sends signals that make characters or objects move on your screen in the direction you're pushing.

Extra switches attached. Joysticks often have buttons and switches built into them for controlling other functions. Airplane pilots use these switches to adjust things like the flaps and landing gear without using their other hands.
