Massive hydraulic cities. The Khmer Empire built amazing cities centered around advanced water systems, which helped them grow food and thrive in the tropical landscape. These weren't just regular towns but engineered marvels.
Centered in Cambodia. The empire was based in what is now northern Cambodia and was known as Kambuja by the people who lived there. At its height, it stretched all the way to southern China.
Ruled for 629 years. The Khmer Empire lasted from 802 to 1431 AD, making it one of the longest-lasting empires in history. During this time it controlled or influenced most of mainland Southeast Asia.
Angkor's glory. Angkor was the empire's most famous capital and is so important that historians call this whole era the Angkor period. The ruins there are some of the most impressive ancient structures in the world.
Grew from Chenla. The Khmer Empire didn't appear out of nowhere, it developed from an earlier civilization called Chenla. This shows how one successful society can transform into an even greater one.
