Cool Facts
Seaweed wrapper. Gimbap uses gim, which are dried sheets of seaweed that hold everything together. The seaweed adds a salty, ocean-like flavor that makes each bite special.
Rice and fillings. Inside the seaweed you find fluffy white rice mixed with vegetables like carrots, spinach, and cucumber, plus options like cooked egg, beef, or seafood. Everyone can customize their gimbap to match what they like.
Perfect slicing. Gimbap gets rolled tightly using a bamboo mat, then sliced into pretty spiral pinwheels that are just the right size to eat in one or two bites.
Japanese and Korean roots. Gimbap came from Japanese norimaki that arrived in Korea during Japanese colonial times, but Korea also had older traditions of wrapping rice in seaweed, so it blends both cultures together.
Portable and fun. Gimbap is perfect for packed lunches, picnics, or quick meals because it's easy to make ahead and tastes great cold or at room temperature.
