Kiwi

New Zealand · flightless birds · small but mighty

Fuzzy like mammals. Kiwi birds have feathers that look and feel like fur, making them the only birds in the world with hair-like plumage instead of regular feathers.

Can't fly at all. Unlike most birds, kiwi have tiny wings hidden under their feathers and are completely flightless, but they're excellent runners and can sprint through the forest quickly.

Only live in New Zealand. Kiwi birds are found nowhere else in the world except New Zealand, making them extra special and unique to that island nation.

Chicken-sized birds. Kiwi are the smallest ratites (a group of giant flightless birds), about the same size as a domestic chicken even though their cousins like emus and ostriches are much bigger.

Super powerful noses. Kiwi have an incredible sense of smell and can find food in the dark by sniffing around on the forest floor for insects, worms, and berries.
