Ancient kingdoms built it. Long before Korea split into North and South in 1945, three powerful kingdoms ruled the peninsula: Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. Each one created beautiful temples, palaces, and art that still inspire people today.

Writing system created. Korea developed Hangul, its own alphabet, in the 1400s. Before that, Koreans used Chinese characters, but Hangul was designed to be simpler and easier for everyday people to learn and use.

Pottery and ceramics. Korean artisans became famous for their celadon pottery, a beautiful blue-green porcelain that was prized across Asia. These glazed bowls and vases showed incredible skill and creativity.

Buddhism and philosophy. Buddhism shaped Korean thought and art for centuries, influencing how people built temples and created sculptures. Confucian ideas also guided family life and respect for elders in traditional Korean society.

Music and performance. Traditional Korean music used instruments like the gayageum, a 12-stringed zither, and featured rhythmic patterns called jangdan. Masked dances and storytelling were popular entertainment at festivals and celebrations.
