Once Poland's Capital. Kraków was the official capital of Poland until 1596, making it one of the most important cities in Polish history. Many kings ruled from here, and it was the heart of the country for hundreds of years.

UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1978, Kraków's Old Town became one of the very first places in the whole world to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This honor means the buildings and streets there are so special and historically important that they need protection for future generations.

Sits on the Vistula River. The city is built along the Vistula River in a region called Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The river has shaped the city's growth and was important for trade and transportation throughout history.

Center of Culture and Art. Kraków has always been a leading hub for Polish artistic, academic, and cultural life. Writers, artists, and scholars have made this city one of Europe's most creative and intellectual places.

Major Polish City Today. With over 800,000 people living in the city and nearly 1.5 million in the metropolitan area, Kraków is Poland's second-largest city and still thriving with modern life.
