Two main types. Rigid ladders stand on their own or lean against walls, while flexible ladders made of rope or wire can hang from above. Each type works best for different jobs.

Rungs are handholds. The steps on a ladder are called rungs, and they let you grip securely as you climb up or down. They're spaced so your feet and hands fit comfortably.

Ladders built civilizations. People have used ladders for thousands of years to build houses, pick fruit, reach high shelves, and explore. They're one of the simplest and most useful tools ever invented.

Safety matters most. A good ladder has wide, sturdy legs and non-slip feet so it won't slide. Always use a ladder on flat ground and have someone nearby to help.
