Leopard Shark

Tiny spotted shark. Leopard sharks are small compared to other sharks, growing only 3.9 to 4.9 feet long. They get their name from the beautiful black saddle-shaped markings and large spots that cover their backs, making them look a bit like leopards.

Shallow water dwellers. These sharks love staying near the coast in water less than 13 feet deep, swimming over sandy, muddy, and rocky areas. They're often found near kelp beds and reefs where they can hunt for food.

School swimmers. Leopard sharks are famous for swimming together in huge schools, and spotting large groups of them in bays and estuaries is super common. They seem to enjoy the company of other sharks rather than hunting alone.

Pacific coast home. You'll find leopard sharks along the Pacific coast of North America, stretching from Oregon all the way down to Mazatlán in Mexico. They have made these warm and cool coastal waters their perfect home.
