Lilacs (Syringa)

Twelve special species. The genus Syringa includes 12 different kinds of lilacs, all woody shrubs that grow flowers in spring. Each species has its own special colors, from deep purple to white and pink.

From East to West. Lilacs started growing wild in southeastern Europe and eastern Asia in forests and scrubby areas. People loved them so much that they brought them to gardens all around the world in temperate climates.

Powerfully fragrant blooms. Lilac flowers are famous for their sweet, strong perfume that fills the air during spring. Many people plant lilacs just for that amazing smell and the big clusters of tiny flowers.

Part of olive family. Even though lilacs don't produce olives, they belong to the same plant family as olive trees. This family includes many plants with four-petaled flowers and tough, woody stems.

Popular garden favorites. Lilacs are grown everywhere in cooler parts of the world as ornamental shrubs for their beauty and fragrance. They're hardy plants that can survive cold winters and come back stronger each spring.
