Portugal's capital. Lisbon is the biggest city in Portugal and the place where the country's government runs things. About 658,000 people live in the city itself, and over 3 million live in the whole area around it.
River Tagus home. The city sits on the northern shore of the River Tagus, one of Europe's most important rivers. This river helped make Lisbon a powerful trading port hundreds of years ago.
Europe's edge. Lisbon's western area stretches all the way to Cabo da Roca, which is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. If you stand there, you're at the continent's very end, looking out at the Atlantic Ocean.
Iberian Peninsula. The city sits on the Iberian Peninsula, which is the big triangular landmass that sticks out into the Atlantic. Portugal and Spain are the two countries that share this peninsula.
