How locks work. A lock has special ridges inside that match the grooves on a key. When you put the right key in and turn it, those ridges line up perfectly and the lock opens, but a wrong key won't fit or turn.

Keys are unique. Every key is cut differently so it only works with its own lock. This means your house key won't open someone else's door, which keeps everyone's belongings safe.

Ancient invention. People have used locks for thousands of years. The very first locks were made of wood and used simple pegs and bolts, long before metal keys were invented.

More than just doors. Locks protect all kinds of things, not just your home. Bikes, cars, safes, and treasure chests all use locks to keep what's inside secure from people who shouldn't access them.

Modern electronic locks. Today, some locks are digital and open with a code, fingerprint, or even your phone instead of a traditional key. These high-tech locks are used in offices and smartphones to keep information private.
