Festival of New Beginnings. Losar marks the start of the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar Tibetan calendar. This special calendar is different from the regular calendar most people use, so Losar falls on different dates each year, usually sometime between February and March.

Year of the Animal. Each Losar celebrates a new animal year in the Tibetan zodiac, just like the Chinese zodiac. In 2025, Losar rang in the Year of the Female Wood Snake, with each animal bringing its own special energy and meaning.

Spiritual Cleansing Time. Tibetan Buddhists use Losar as a time to clean their homes, wear new clothes, and prepare spiritually for the year ahead. Many people visit monasteries and temples to receive blessings and make offerings during the celebration.

Dates Change Each Year. Because Losar follows the lunisolar calendar (which is based on the moon's cycles), the festival doesn't fall on the same date every year like January 1st does. In 2025, celebrations lasted from February 28 through March 2.

Multi-Day Celebration. Losar isn't just one day, but a several-day festival filled with family gatherings, special foods, music, dancing, and community celebrations that honor ancestors and welcome good fortune.
