Found ancient humans. Louis Leakey discovered some of the oldest human fossils in a place called Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. These bones helped prove that humans first evolved in Africa, not somewhere else.

Worked with his wife. Louis and his wife Mary were both paleontologists who dug up fossils together. Mary was just as brilliant as Louis and made many important discoveries alongside him.

Changed what we knew. Before Louis's work, many people thought humans came from Europe or Asia. His discoveries in Africa showed the world that Africa was the true birthplace of humanity.

Inspired future scientists. Louis was such a great teacher that he encouraged many people to become paleontologists and archaeologists. Even members of his own family became famous scientists who continued his work.

Built a research program. Louis set up the first major system for studying human origins in eastern Africa. This gave other scientists a place and a reason to keep searching for ancient human remains.
