Powerful Mali ruler. Mansa Musa was the ninth leader of the Mali Empire in West Africa during the 1300s. He ruled during a time when Mali became incredibly wealthy and famous.
Unbelievably rich. Mansa Musa had more gold than most people could imagine, which made Mali one of the richest kingdoms in the entire world at that time. His wealth came from controlling gold mines and trade routes.
Famous pilgrimage. Mansa Musa traveled to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, bringing thousands of people and so much gold that the journey made Mali famous across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Built cities up. He used his wealth to construct impressive buildings, mosques, and universities that made Mali's cities centers of learning and culture.
Peak of power. Historians believe that under Mansa Musa's rule, the Mali Empire reached its strongest point, though earlier leaders remain more famous in Mali's traditional stories.
