Shaker with a handle. A maraca is a rattle that you hold by its handle and shake to make music. The sound comes from something inside, like seeds or beads, bouncing around.

Played in pairs. Maracas are usually played two at a time, one in each hand, so musicians can make different rhythms and sounds together.

Caribbean and Latin music. You'll hear maracas in salsa, merengue, reggae, and other Caribbean and Latin American music styles where they help keep the beat.

Called a maraquero. A person who plays the maraca in Spanish-speaking countries is called a maraquero, which means maraca player.

Colorful and fun. Maracas come in bright colors and fun shapes, and they're popular in both professional orchestras and at parties and celebrations.
