Mary McLeod Bethune

Built a college. Mary McLeod Bethune founded a school for Black students in Florida when many places refused to educate them, turning a small start into something that helped hundreds of young people get a real education.

Founded major organizations. She created the National Council of Negro Women in 1935, which brought together Black women to fight for equality and justice together, making their voices much stronger.

First in history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her to lead a department in the National Youth Administration, making her the first Black woman ever to run a federal government agency.

Champion for justice. Mary spent her whole life working to end unfair treatment and help Black Americans get equal rights, education, and opportunities in a country that often said no to them.

Started a journal. She launched the Aframerican Women's Journal to share the stories and ideas of Black women, giving them a powerful way to speak up and be heard.
