Island in the Ocean. Mauritius is located about 1,100 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean. It's not just one island but a group, including the main island of Mauritius, plus Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon.

Capital City. Port Louis is the capital and largest city of Mauritius, where most of the country's population lives. It's located on the main island.

Mascarene Islands. Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean that also includes the nearby island of Réunion.

Island Size. The country spans about 2,040 square kilometres, which is roughly the size of a small country. But Mauritius controls a huge area of ocean around it called an exclusive economic zone.
