Mausolus

Powerful regional ruler. Mausolus ruled Caria and also controlled parts of Lycia, Ionia, and several islands in the Dodecanese. He inherited this powerful position from his father Hecatomnus, who was the first satrap (governor) of Caria under the Persian Empire.

Built for eternity. Mausolus ordered the construction of an enormous, elaborately decorated tomb at Halicarnassus that was so impressive it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The tomb was so magnificent that all grand tombs are now called 'mausoleums' after him.

Ruled with family. Mausolus and his wife Artemisia, who was also his sister, worked together to build their legendary tomb. Artemisia is often credited with completing the project and making it even more spectacular after Mausolus died.

Commanded vast lands. During his reign, Mausolus expanded his control over multiple regions around the Aegean Sea. His domain included territories in what is now Turkey and the surrounding islands, making him one of the most powerful rulers of his time.
