Ancient cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde contains thousands of rooms built into cliff faces by the Ancestral Puebloans between 600 and 1300 AD. These amazing structures were carved right into the rock and protected people from harsh weather.

Protected by cliffs. The park's name means 'green table' in Spanish, and the flat-topped mountains create perfect natural shelters. People chose these cliffs specifically because they kept homes safe and cool.

Super well preserved. Mesa Verde is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means the world recognizes it as incredibly important. The dry Colorado air has kept the buildings, pottery, and artifacts in amazing condition so we can study them today.

Mystery of the move. Around 1300 AD, the Ancestral Puebloans left Mesa Verde and moved south to what is now New Mexico and Arizona. Scientists are still learning why this group of clever builders decided to leave their cliff homes.

You can explore it. Today, visitors can hike to the cliff dwellings and see the actual homes where families lived long ago. Walking through the ancient rooms makes history feel real and close.
