Replaced Spanish Coins. Before 1863, Mexico used a currency called the real, which came from when Spain controlled the country. The peso took its place and became the new official money.

Created in 1863. The Mexican government introduced the peso about 160 years ago, giving Mexico its own independent currency as the country continued to develop.
