What is microbiology?. Microbiology is the study of organisms so small that you need a powerful microscope to see them. These tiny creatures include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other single-celled beings that live all around us.

Invisible life everywhere. Microorganisms are found in soil, water, air, and even inside your body. Most of them are harmless or helpful, but some can cause diseases that scientists study to keep us healthy.

Many branches of study. Microbiology splits into different specialties like virology (studying viruses), bacteriology (studying bacteria), and mycology (studying fungi). Each branch focuses on a different type of microscopic life.

Helpful microbes. Microorganisms are used to make yogurt, cheese, bread, and medicine like antibiotics. Without helpful microbes, we wouldn't have these foods or medicines that save lives every day.

Tools of discovery. Microbiologists use special equipment like electron microscopes and petri dishes to grow and study microorganisms. These tools help scientists understand how tiny creatures work and how to use them wisely.
